A mother, wife, auntie, daughter and educator, Corinne Skworchinski (Biidaabinaqwe), is a non-indigenous Canadian born in Newfoundland; however, she has spent most of her life in Northern Ontario, having moved to Marathon 37 years ago. Corinne recently obtained her Master of Education degree from Lakehead University, specializing in Indigenous education. For the last 22 years, she has worked at Biigtigong Nishnaabeg Elementary School. Throughout these years, Corinne has taught in the primary grades, been principal, and is currently in the role of the school's Math and Literacy Lead teacher. She continues to be part of the curriculum team that has developed the locally driven curriculum at the elementary school in Biigtigong. Corinne has had the honour to attend ceremonies and learn about the traditional ways and language of the Ojibway of Biigtigong through her connection with the school and community. Her time spent in Biigtigong and on the land, the skills and knowledge of moose and fish harvesting, canoeing the Biigtig, and the importance of living a balanced life (minobimaadiziwin), has helped her to value the community culture as she continues to support and learn with the students daily.
